2017 is a great year for anniversaries!  While my traveling to Europe is primarily to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal (in Rome at Pentecost), I was delighted to find out that it is also the 200th anniversary of the death of Jane Austen, to be celebrated beginning on her birthday in July.  Though a little early for some of the major celebrations, I was able to visit a few sites that are connected to her, after surviving many dangers, toils, and snares (see post on Letting Go in Hampshire). Enjoy!

“It is reported that Jane Austen visited Netley, finding inspiration for her novel Northanger Abbey (published posthumously in 1817).”  ~English Heritage

“We had a little water party yesterday; I and my two nephews [George and Edward Knight] went from the Itchen Ferry up to Northam, where we landed, looked into the 74, and walked home, and it was so much enjoyed that I had intended to take them to Netley to-day; the tide is just right for our going immediately after noonshine, but I am afraid there will be rain; if we cannot get so far, however, we may perhaps go round from the ferry to the quay.”
